the Wagon R continues to sell in healthy numbers and is always among the top 4-5 selling cars in the Indian market in terms of monthly sales figures. It isn’t a very modern or a beautiful looking hatchback – what it easily retains is its tall boy look. The new version has grown in every department and is now an overall bigger vehicle too. Dimension wise, the Wagon R 3595mm long, stands 1700mm tall and is 1495mm wide. The new Wagon R has some changes. The new Wagon R gets exterior and interior updates which are designed to make it look fresher. We think the front end now looks much better. The new grille has become more narrow and the front bumper now has a bigger air dam plus there are new look fog lamps as well. However it is all not just cosmetic as the front upper grille has also been designed to reduce air borne noise. The Lxi and Vxi get a chrome front grille. The Wagon R was always known and appreciated for its practical and roomy interiors. Ofcourse there is acres of head room around and the tall body with big windows adds to the overall airy feeling inside. The upgraded version got a completely revamped cabin which now makes this car look upmarket and classy for this price segment. Getting into a commanding driving position is pretty easy. At the back, with short to medium size front passengers, knee room is pretty impressive.. On the inside the changes are more subtle with the interiors getting a beige/black combo look which again lifts the cabin ambience to some extent. The top of the line Vxi gets beige seats while the Lx and Lxi gets dual coloured ones. The music system has also been upgraded and you now get USB, though you get this in higher variants only. Its also more practical now with a Push type I/P upper storage box. The new Wagon R is now powered by the 1.0litre KB series engine that puts out 68PS of power 90Nm of torque. With a kerb weight that ranges between 860 and 885, the relatively light weight tall-boy car makes the most use of this engine and doesn’t really a chance for any complain. The engine does have its typical three-cylinder sound (or noise if you want to call it) but in daily usage, it turns out be a fairly capable with a very efficient nature. The car maker claims 20.51 kmpl which is just brilliant. Out on the highway as well, the Wagon R has a stable feel. Triple digit speeds are easy and you don’t have a reason to complain even on hilly roads or corners at normal speeds. The steering is of the electric variety which means it is super light at low speeds. Now this is a huge boon for city usage and this combined with an excellent driver’s view means this is one of the best cars in the segment for city usage. Maruti also offers optional ABS. In typical driving conditions, ie, city roads that aren’t always smooth, the Wagon R does a remarkable job. The suspension soaks up most bumps without making the ride uncomfortable. It is only the bigger obstacles which tend to unsettle the car. The CNG variant is now priced at Rs 4.42 lakh while the top-end Vxi variant will set you back by 4.13 lakh. The new Wagon R in Lxi trim is priced at Rs 3.88 lakh ex-showroom. The cheapest is Rs 3.58 lakh for the base model.
